Student Activities

Students and/or the community seek the admissions/registration office staff to:

• find out about program openings and tuition/fee charges,
• obtain career planning guides,
• inquire about application procedures or deadlines,
• pick up applications and/or apply for admission,
• obtain a student identification number and a registration access time,
• register for classes,
• pick up forms used to process add/drop activity or withdraw from SCC, and
• find out about quarterly processing deadlines (i.e., signature requirements, percentage refund dates, last date to withdraw, etc.).

Registration Options:

• In-Person Registration

Students may register or do add/drop transactions in-person by visiting the registration/admissions office during business hours. Counselors may be available to assist you in class selection. Early registration appointments are assigned according to enrolled program. To register in a full class requires that you obtain the instructor's signature to authorize an overload.

To register for a class with a requisite, you must:

• have successfully completed or are currently enrolled in the requisite class at SCC, OR
• have an appropriate assessment score on record at SCC, OR
• have taken the requisite course elsewhere. In this case you must obtain an entry authorization from an SCC Counselor in Building 15 before registering.

Athletic facilities include a full-size pool, indoor and outdoor running tracks, fast fitness center, weight room, tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer and football fields, and complete track and field facilities. The Health and Wellness Program at SCC assists any student who wishes to improve him/herself physically in a program of exercise carefully designed with the individual in mind. Hours vary each quarter based upon class schedules. Additional information is available for the swimming pool and the fitness center.

The cash machine, located in the Lair lobby, is available for students and staff to use during Lair hours. Any problems with the cash machine should be directed to the Student Activities Staff in the Lair Addition.

Automotive repair and services are available to students and faculty.

A full-service bakery is available to students. Limited items are available for purchase. Stop by in person to place special orders.

Sodexho offers catering services as well as special diets for alternative food choices and preparations for your individual needs upon request.

In cooperation with the Inland Northwest Blood Center, SCC sponsors a quarterly (except summer) blood drive for one day. Benefits include a two-year, unlimited family plan; blood pressure check and refreshments follow donation.

The bookstore offers film developing, stamps, tools, greeting cards, clothing, electronics and computer software at discounted rates. The bookstore hosts a used book buy-back sale during the last days each quarter.

Bus service is available daily throughout the year. Monthly student/VIP and quarterly (unlimited usage) bus passes are available to SCC students at the Cashiers Office located in Building 50, the Max Snyder Building. Bus schedules are available by calling (509) 328-RIDE or by visiting the Spokane Transit website at www.spokanetransit.com/spokanetransit. Bus stops are located on the north side of the SCC clock tower.

Tuition and parking fees are paid to the cashier's office. You may also purchase bus passes; welding and copy cards; and medical and liability insurance. Distribution of financial aid, loan and work study checks is handled through the cashiers' office and you may cash personal checks up to $30.00 (two-party checks are not accepted). A valid photo ID is required.

The Community, Career and Employment Services Office includes the following service areas:

Computer Labs are available for students to use in Buildings 1, 7, 8, 9, 16, and 19. Open lab times vary depending on class schedules. Student KIOSK computers are available in Buildings 15 and 50 during normal business hours.

Continuing Education offers a wide variety of state-support and self-support classes (not financed by state tax funds), the latter providing adults and young people a creative outlet to pursue activities not related to a college credit program. Topics are offered each quarter in recreation and vocational courses. Students, companies, and the community seek the registration office to inquire about various programs and to register for classes.

Coin-operated copy machines are available for student use in the Learning Resources Center, Building 16, in the library area.

Full salon services at minimal cost; hair appointments, manicures, pedicures and artificial nails available. Services are provided by SCC cosmetology students.

Counseling/advising services assist students in becoming self-directed by helping them to develop a program to meet their educational, vocational, and personal needs and goals. SCC provides services through the following offices:

Counseling/advising services are provided to all students at SCC. All information is held in the strictest confidence.

In accordance with the American Disabilities Act, the center provides services to students with documented disabilities. Note and/or test taking assistance, interpreter services, specialized learning software and hardware and other services are available for students. Discount movie tickets to Regal Cinemas ($6.00) and AMC Theatres ($6.00) are available for purchase at the cashier's office in Building 50.

Environmental Sciences has a floral shop and greenhouse. The floral shop has flower arrangements for purchase. The greenhouse has indoor and outdoor plant sales periodically throughout the year.

Fax service is available through the administrative office of the Learning Resources Center. Rates are as follows:

Applying for financial aid is a complicated process and awards usually take up to two months to be approved, sometimes longer. Please plan ahead! The staff awards aid according to federal and state guidelines and rules.

The Associated Student Council (ASC) sponsors a campus emergency food bank and resource center to assist students in need. Quarterly hours are posted on the door and services are available to all SCC students. After completing minor paperwork, this service allows students to request emergency food three times per quarter. All information is kept strictly confidential. Also available is a listing of local emergency services. Donations are gladly accepted and appreciated.

The game room features billiard tables, ping pong tables, darts, video games, TV room, and a jukebox.

Grades are available four business days after the end of each quarter on the Internet at: https://secure.scc.spokane.edu/wts/info/

Grades are also mailed to students one week after the end of each quarter.

Students must complete a Petition for Degree or Certificate form to have their credits evaluated for the requirements of their degree and/or certificate. The forms are available at the division offices, counseling center (Building 15), the information desk (Building 50), or they can be downloaded from the CCS website. A separate Petition for Degree or Certificate form is required for each degree or certificate. A petition should be completed two quarters prior to the anticipated completion date in order to ensure all requirements are met and all degrees/certificates earned are recorded on the student's transcript. Submit the completed form to the Transcript Office (Building 50).

Completing the Petition for Degree or Certificate form entitles students to participate in the graduation ceremony. Division graduation ceremonies are held once each school year at the end of spring quarter. Students completing their degree requirements at other times during the year are encouraged to return to participate in the June ceremonies. Health Science offers some health services according to class programs, i.e., dietetic services offers nutritional analysis during spring quarter. Dental care offers free dental hygiene information and other dental services throughout the year. Echocardiography offers EKG testing during winter quarter. Check with the office on specific services and timelines. A Health Sciences Resource Center is also available.

SCC offers hearing-impaired students access to comprehensive support services while attending regular programs.

Provides admission and registration assistance to students from foreign countries. Also designs activities to promote understanding of cultures and sharing of world perspectives. Responsible for the development of international initiatives that enhance SCC's leadership role in the global community. Please visit the International Programs site for more information.

The LRC (Building 16) includes the Library and Media Services.

The library provides reference and educational materials to students, faculty, and staff. The library staff is available to help collect information needed to complete course assignments. For additional information check out the library website.

Lair lockers are located in the main lobby and may be checked out in the Student Activities Office. Lockers in Building 1 may be checked out at the cashiers' office in Building 50. Lockers in other buildings may be checked out through the building secretary or department.

All items found are to be turned in to this office. Lost items can be identified and claimed here.

The only mailbox for outgoing, off-campus mail is located outside the east entrance of Building 15. Postage stamps are available in the bookstore (Lair, Building 6).

Media services consist of the media lab, media equipment services, media production and graphics. There are multiple viewing areas and a number of small group study/preview rooms. There is also an electronic classroom available for large group study or teleconferences. The center has editing capabilities for media production. Color copies and overhead transparencies can be made for a nominal charge. Media staff provide technical support and equipment to faculty, staff and students.

Provides community outreach and support services to people of color who wish to enroll or are enrolled at SCC. Coordinates new student orientation programs to ensure success in school. Also sponsors activities designed to heighten awareness and cultural sensitivity among staff, faculty and students.

Orlando's is a luncheon restaurant facility staffed by students from the culinary arts program and features fine and exotic cuisine. Reservations are recommended. Orlando's is open to students and staff.

Parking passes are purchased at the cashiers' office on a quarterly basis. Parking passes are to be displayed from the rearview mirror and are valid only in designated student parking areas. Passes must be renewed each quarter. Tickets must be paid before the end of the quarter for release of grades, to pick up financial aid checks, or to register.

All students should familiarize themselves with the CCS Selected Rules, Regulations and Policies Concerning Student Conduct, Student Records, Traffic, Health and Safety Regulations and Rights of Appeal. If you have any questions or would like copies of these rules, please contact the Vice President of Enrollment Services and Student Development in Building 50 (Max Snyder Building), Building 16 (Learning Resources Center), or any dean's office.

SCC Security is responsible for campus security. Services include directions, vehicle jump starts and lock outs, lost and found, and safety escorts.

Smoking is prohibited in any building on the Spokane Community College campus and in college-owned vehicles. Smoking is prohibited within 25 feet of the entrances to campus buildings and No Smoking signs are posted in these areas. Smoking receptacles are available 25 feet from the high traffic entrances on campus to accommodate smokers.

If you smoke, please refrain from doing so in areas where signs prohibiting smoking are posted. Also, please fully extinguish your cigarettes and deposit them in an ashtray before entering designated no smoking zones.

The Student Activities Office has general campus information including housing, graduation, Lair lockers, vending machine reimbursement, campus bulletin board approval, student government, and campus clubs and organizations.

The Associated Student Council meets on Wednesdays at 2:45 p.m. in the Lair upstairs conference room. All students are encouraged to attend. Applications for council positions are accepted throughout the year. Elections for president and vice president are held in April. Executive council is appointed in May and senator positions are appointed in October. All positions receive a quarterly stipend.

Accident and health insurance is available to students on a quarterly basis. Information is located at the cashiers' office. An insurance plan must be purchased within the first twenty (20) days of each quarter.

Free courtesy telephones are available in Buildings 9, 16, and 19 for student use.

Global Travel is the official travel agency for the Community Colleges of Spokane and is available to students for leisure travel arrangements.

The Tutoring Center is a basic skills center and offers a variety of help for all classes. Individual tutors are also available on request through the Peer Tutor program.

Reimbursement for money lost in campus vending machines is processed through the Student Activities Office.

In partnership with Employment Security, the Worker Retraining Program provides job training for dislocated workers, people receiving employment benefits and those facing imminent layoffs.
